Richmound sits about 80 kilometres northeast of Medicine Hat, Alberta, in the Rural Municipality of Enterprise No. 142. The area was settled between 1908 and 1914 by Germans, mostly Catholics who had come from South Russia. The Richmound post office opened in 1912, and in 1917 St. Mary's Catholic church was founded northwest of the townsite; it moved into the community in 1928. Richmound became a village on May 5, 1947.
In the 1980s a natural gas discovery brought new businesses and housing. By the 2000s oil and gas activity had slowed, jobs were lost, and the K-12 school closed in 2008. The local grocery store and curling rink closed in the years that followed. Today the economy still leans on oil and gas and agriculture, and the village has a community hall, church, skating arena, ball diamonds, a credit union and a general store. Students are bussed to a neighbouring village.
In September 2023, Romana Didulo, leader of a sovereign citizen group, and some of her supporters took up residence in the former school. Demonstrations followed, and the RCMP raided the school in September 2025. The village's experience was part of a CBC Uncover podcast series. A community greenhouse project near the former school was launched in July 2026 to bring people together and improve access to locally grown food, since the nearest grocery store is in Leader.
